It's understandable that using something like pkg-config can avoid this causing problems, but it's still a bit of an issue.
It's not only the libraries that are named in such a way, the headers are located in /usr/include/lua5.1/* rather than /usr/include/* (which they are in all other distributions I've checked on). Is there any particular reason for naming them differently?
