It's understandable that using something like pkg-config can avoid this
causing problems, but it's still a bit of an issue.

It's not only the libraries that are named in such a way, the headers
are located in /usr/include/lua5.1/* rather than /usr/include/* (which
they are in all other distributions I've checked on).

Is there any particular reason for naming them differently? If not, then
surely it would make sense to follow the same pattern as other
distributions, to help ease compatibility.
