@Dmitry, In theory, yes it's possible. But there is another showstopper problem in version 1.7 with the newer versions of phonon-gstreamer (from 12.04 onward). Playback randomly stops and skips to the next video. So that would need another patch. IMO we end up with something much less tested than proper 1.9 (or even 1.8).
