Ok I made a clone of my root partition and dist-upgraded to gutsy. Not everything went well but with a little work I could boot into the 2.6.22-rc3 kernel and open a Gnome session. During my one week testing, the keyboard repeat problem never showed up once. So it's fair to say that it has been somehow solved between feisty and gutsy.
There are numerous updates between the two versions, but my first guess was the kernel. So I rolled back my root partition to feisty using my clone, and I decided to compile the gutsy kernel 2.6.22-rc3 and restricted-modules under feisty (not install gutsy's packages as restricted-modules would need tons of dependencies). Now that ain't simple for most people : you got to mess your /etc/apt/source.list to download gutsy's "linux-source" BINARY package (which only contains a tar ball extracted in /usr/src), as well as its "linux-restricted- modules" SOURCE package. Then, I followed up the wiki for building kernels (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelCustomBuild) using the Alternate Build Method: The Old-Fashioned Debian Way, which I prefer (and the only I managed to get working). Anyway, it worked and I've been running a 2.6.22-rc3 kernel optimized for my feisty laptop for 2 weeks, and didn't see the keyboard repeat bug since. So, I really think there is a bug in the 2.6.20-15 or -16 serie, but it has disappeared in 2.6.22. Once you all upgrade to gutsy, everything will be solved. Until that, I'll maybe try to find an official Ubuntu Gutsy kernel config file as mine is now heavily modified, and maybe I could compile and distribute 2.6.22-rc3 kernel packages for i386 feisty fawn as a workaround. If someone else with more spare time wants to do it, then go I don't mind at all ! If anyone wish to post a gusty kernel config file (for i386), feel free to do so. Of course you can try to recompile your own kernel, it's fairly easy, but the restricted-modules (nvidia/ati) is far from being trivial. Good luck. I would encourage any developper to try to solve this bug, but I myself have no clue where to look at and don't have much will to do so, it has already been fixed in 2.6.22... -- repeate rate problem, sometimes repeats character many times while typing. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92594 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
