Alan, I entered "totem %m"(it was VLC as player) into where you said and I 
still can't play DVD's.  I opened totem and the DVD section is whited out and 
can't be selected.  I went to places, computer and I still can't mount the DVD.

Perhaps you are running into the udf permission issue (

What happens if you put "totem %m" in the Video DVD Disks section of
System → Preferences → Removable Drives and Media → Multimedia?

If that gives a permission error, try it with "gksudo totem %m¨.
