Kate, In your screenshots I am seeing two issues.
1. the app is running but there is no indication for that in the unity launcher on the left. 2a. there are no global menus 2b. when you maximize the app there are no window controls in the panel, neither is there the application title. This is exactly what's reported in bug 1053288 (see Laura's screenshot).
