We've made some progress with three possible versions of the patch:
QML:
unpatched: http://ubuntuone.com/7a8TfmDRaYUaRYWZUtRmuW
medium: http://ubuntuone.com/0sZZPdbwYeG9iSIcvMZtSe
medium+demibold/2: http://ubuntuone.com/1Iurc6svseVNZ31sTEjs81
demibold: http://ubuntuone.com/5fJQHga4xfZiXGuBAIoNO8

Qt GUI:
unpatched: http://ubuntuone.com/2QVRUraAPK5pr7VlbHmJG1
medium: http://ubuntuone.com/4ef1K6IseimToUsbGj5ghB
medium+demibold/2: http://ubuntuone.com/0a5N1ArQQbEy0xoxy1RzId
demibold: http://ubuntuone.com/1xz9HLhm7hYg5s4Vf6NiZo

It seems that the "medium" one is the least wrong, but changes behaviour
for DemiBold for fonts that only have Regular and Bold.

I'm not sure why "medium+demibold/2" for DemiBold selects a font heavier
than Bold. Will investigate as fixing that could yield best results with
smallest behaviour change.
