Public bug reported:

Upon upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, GNOME can no longer utilize the lock
screen. When locking, an image of my desktop background and the current
time appears, but when attempting to unlock, I'm not prompted for a
password (as I should be, and as it is set to do). Instead, I get a
notification that GNOME couldn't connect to the GDM, so locking was
disabled.

** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
