I have a G4 iBook. I've installed fine with the alternate tonight. I used 'install video=ofonly'.
I think possibly KMS is picking a poor modeline for you and your signal is going out of range for your monitor. Hence black screen. Otherwise it is your card (see the kernel release notes about the radeon 9200).
