It's early days, but I may have fixed this in on my Tosh R900 by using ccsm to 
change :
OpenGL  - "Sync to VBlank" change to Off.
Composite - "Detect Refresh Rate" change to Off. My Refresh rate was 60, which 
I think is suitable for most laptops.

So far, I've opened the lid twice without issue where before it was
regularly freezing.

My settings are those of the original - I'm not suspending, I'm choosing
the "Do Nothing" action for lid closed, but I have a lock on the
screensaver. Fingers crossed that this remains the case.
