Okay, unfortunately it sounds like this is combining multiple bugs into
a single bug report, but let's try to separate them out.

A.  Mis-detection of resolution during installation.  This sounds like
bug 3731.  I will do additional research into this.

B.  X crashes when changing resolution with xrandr.  This sounds like
bug 91591, however that one was with the VESA driver.  I found a report
of xrandr causing X to crash on 915GM using -i810 at
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2006-June/016518.html,
however I'm unsure that's related to this.

Can you please collect a backtrace of the X crash after attempting to
change the resolution with xrandr?

C.  xrander gives error message "X Error of failed request..."

I think I have enough information to report this one upstream, which
I'll do tomorrow.
