Christopher, unfortunately the latest catalyst driver that still has support for this card is 9.3 (http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/catalyst_93_linux.pdf). This driver requires lower x.org version which is not compatible with current Ubuntu. So the only option is to fix the open source driver.
