This bug hit me when hibernating the machine failed. On all subsequent restarts, the machine would not automatically reconnect to the wired network, but dhclient could grab an IP if run manually. All "network state aware" applications, ie: Chrome & pidgin exhibited broken behaviours after obtaining a network address - Pidgin refused to connect to any services at all. Chrome could browse, but all application icons on the 'New Tab' page were grayed out, and no plugins would start. to fix DHCP, I had to edit /etc/network/interfaces, and uncomment the following line: # iface eth0 inet dhcp while this allowed the machine to connect to the network at boot, the problems with the applications persisted.
