Well, with the -extras- package installed there is now display on the Samsung SyncMaster 223BW but there is still no EDID information for this monitor printed in Xorg.0.log even though the "Displays" dialog does have information about the monitor. Also, the system displays 1280×1024 on the monitor which is capable of 1680×1050. If I try to use "Displays" to increase the dimension then I get a black screen and error messages in Xorg.0.log:
