Update: compiz works now. I am not sure if it was fixed by some update, or if it might be what I tried :
at first I looked in the Ubuntu wiki to find instructions on how to get compiz going. But since it didn't work, and it's wan't even clear what version of Ubuntu the instructions were tested/valid on, I did it the old way : "man compiz" ! And 20 seconds later compiz was working ! The man page explains that to use compiz with Aiglx, you need to pass two arguments: --indirect-rendering, and another I have already forgotten the name of.
