Today's live dvd build for Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) still has this
bug, although it does seem as if you have to do a little more than just
increasing and decreasing the brightness (you have to increase and
decrease it rapidly, kind of agressively), but maybe it just seems that
way to me.

I do agree that this is a rather serious problem. Not being able to
increase or decrease the brightness on a laptop seriously affects
battery life (as I am stuck on maximum brightness), almost to the point
where it is becoming a problem for use during class, which is my laptops
main purpose (and I opted for the extra large battery, so I can't even
imagine what it's like for people with the normal battery). So I do hope
this will be fixed as soon as possible, hopefully at least by 12.10.
