Dave I tried the following to test out some things and the installation
was perfectly smooth without any issues.  So I think the problem is that
the removal step #2 needs to be automated in the Xorg-edgers packaging
scripts because of the above issue you mentioned with 3.5 Kernel.

1. Dropped into TTY-1 and stopped lightdm.

2. Removed Nvidia-Current 'apt-get remove --purge nvidia-current'.

3. Ran the official installer 'NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-304.30.run'.

4. Restarted lightdm and did a graphical reboot.

Previously I omitted the removal step in #2 and I had significant
problems installing 304.30 this way as it would not even write the new
driver as I could not find it in /proc/driver/nvidia and was still at
the old version while nvidia-xsettings were at 304.30 and the DKMS
scripts thought that I was running 304.30.
