I tried to create the folders that appeared missing in the strace output posted here by HidingGeryan. As the output says they were non-existent:
/etc/ld.so.prelaod /etc/ld.so.nohwcap Not sure if this relates in any way to not being able to run my software-center as regular user. Works fine as root if I run it from command prompt though.
