Looks like this bug has been there since at least kernel 2.6.33, as evidenced by this Fedora bug report: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=593035 [Somebody complains about this bug to be present in Fedora 13 through 16 as well as Debian 6.0].
