One workaround is using this command (as normal user) udisks --mount /dev/fd0 to mount a floppy, then it can be safely detached via GUI (e.g. in nautilus, right click the floppy icon...). Once can create a .desktop file to run the command and drag&drop it onto the unity launcher.
