This bug was caused by purging linux-container, which claims it can't stat /usr/share/sysvinit/inittab. However, when trying to enter that directory , it doesn't exist at all. After "sudo mkdir /usr/share/sysvinit/ " , cd to it, and touch the inittab file, the problem goes away and linux-container was successfully purged.
