this worked for me exactly as you described it. unity was also switching back 
to 2d.

this can be avoided if you use twinview. but don't forget to disable the 
"sticky edges" in "all settings/display" as michael walker pointed out.
btw: why is this feature not automatically turned off, when i don't use 
autohide?? that's annoying.
