No change in behavior—“front” still controls ALL volume, and when I plug in headphones, it still does not sense it. The only thing that adding that option does is prevent the following message from appearing in the kernel ring buffer: [ 16.964000] hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC883, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
