I may have mistaken this bug for another, related one.

Anyway, part of the confusion for me, was that several Indicator Applet
packages exist in Ubuntu, and more than one produce items in the Add to
Panel dialog.  For "indicator", Synaptic shows:

    indicator-applet indicator-applet-appmenu indicator-applet-complete
indicator-applet-session

These do different things. I have not sorted out which does what.  The
descriptions don't say much.  It would be helpful if there were an
"About" for panel applets (wasn't there one before?)
