On my Acer Laptop 7520 / AMD Turion / 2 Gb Ram/ Nividia graphics w
shared mem Ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes: only the mouse cursor keeps
moving. Hard reset is the only way out. The problem seems to be related
somehow to screen output: if I don't touch my system it keeps running.
If I start browsing (lots of rendering) or play videos the system
freezes almost instantly. Just running some programs that are less heavy
on screen output do eventually cause a freeze, but it definitely takes
longer. Nonetheless 12.04 is not suitable for production purposes:
several freezes per (working) day is alpha level!

I reported this bug earlier under # 993187. Somehow it seems that no
developer is willing to pick up this bug. I'ts unclear what package
causes these freezes. As freezes appear on a very wide range of systems,
it seems to me that is must be in some package that is common on a wide
range of machines, so probably not Nvidia drivers or other specific
hardware related stuff like Ivy bridge etc. I do not have another system
to test Ubuntu 12.04 with. I also have a netbook, but my SSD is too
small for installing 12.04 with unity onto it. Does anybody have a
second system: does it run there smoothly or not? It seems so widespread
that I wonder if it can be reproduced on a wide range of systems.

For some it seems that a kernel update (or downgrade) is working.
Perhaps it's worthwhile looking into the differences between those
kernels in relation to screen output. Which screen related parts have
changed? As 11.10 runs very smooth on my system perhaps a comparison
between the kernel in 11.10 and 12.04 (just for screen output related
parts) would help.

I haven't tried Ubuntu 12.04 lately: I need my system for daily work, so
I'm back on 11.10. I have tried an alternative kernel before with little
effect (freezing occurred less frequent, but still occurred too often).
I don't now if my system would run more reliable with other kernels. As
I explained before I need my laptop for daily work and don't want to run
into trouble again with 12.04. I'm considering to wait for 12.10 and
wait until XMas holiday to try it and keep my fingers crossed that the
problem will be gone with 12.10. Does anyone who has trouble with 12.04
try 12.10 alpha or beta version yet?
