Steve, sorry for the late reply, was away from my main machine.

Apparently that fixed it! Added the line and voila, it booted without
the fglrx driver.

I don't see what are you guys talking about the degraded boot
experience? When it boots it still shows the Ubuntu logo and the dots
under it, then transitions smoothly to the desktop (I have autologin on)
