It is difficult for me to understand English. I hope I have understand
your questions right.

1. even on 12.04 LTS amd64 it works in general, but for some reason it
crashes sometimes. correct?

I have made the follow test on my desktop pc with 12.04 LTS amd64. Not
on my notebook with 12.04 LTS amd64.

a) Scanning multi page document in text modus 300 dpi. Unfortunately
simple-scan has no page counter so I think simple scan crashed by
scanning the 10 page.

b) Scanning multi page document in text modus 300 dpi. I think simple
scan crashed by scanning the 20 page.

c) Scanning 1 page document in text modus 300 dpi. The scan of a page
takes seconds approximately 40 minutes. I have scanned about 45 minutes.
So I scanned an estimated minimum of 60 pages. Simple scan is not
crashed.

2. do you do something in simple scan (except hitting "scan page")? page
reordering, deletion, crop, stopping a running scan, ...

In the tests above, I changed the Default resolution of 150 dpi to 300.
During the actual scan, I just followed repeated Ctrl +1 or Ctrl +1 Ctrl
+ N used. Otherwise, no other features of the program were used.

3. do you do something on the machine that might interfere in any way?
(dis)connect usb devices, run low-level scripts, ...

No other USB devices except the USB mouse were attached. There were no
other programs running. The installation is not in its original state
but has been little used. Specific changes were not made to the system.

4. does it crash more or less nondeterministically or does it always
crash immediately after hitting "scan page" for the eleventh time?

So far, simple scan in any attempt to scan multiple pages in a row
crashed. The crash occurs after Ctrl +1 or the scan button is pressed.
First, the window is gray. Either immediately or after 1-2 seconds. This
condition lasts for about 10-20 seconds until the window closes and
opens the error report. The carriage of the scanner has not moved in the
two tests as simple scan crashed.
