For the record:

1. the escape of the @ sign was UNnecessary.
2. it is not an lftp issue.
3. the issue turned out to be an (unrelated) security certificate verification 
issue. here is what fixed it for me:

it was thought to be related to the @ sign since the dozens of other
accounts we have working did not have an @ sign in them. In the end, it
was something entirely different.
