By judging from the screenshot and the timing of the onset, I'd say this is a hardware error.

I vote the serial driver... especially if it's of brand National Semiconductor... >:( (they had it coming...) As this is a hardware problem, Linux Mint 7 is long gone, the OP doesn't seem to be active on Launchpad and the Toshiba in question most likely is in a cupboard somewhere, I close this thread as invalid.
