There's only one hard disk present in the machine, and is the only one
detected by the BIOS.

Since then I've reinstalled and this went away. But I believe the bug is
real and that grub should "intelligently" check if the partitions have
changed and update menu.lst accordingly, if possible.

I believe some work can also be done so the default boot option gets
updated once a new kernel is installed (this has been troublesome in my
mother in-law desktop, that still resists to Ubuntu, given that often I
forget to revise the menu.lst after updates and she gets locked out of
her familiar Windows installation)
