I am also experiencing the same issue on my Aspire 6920. I have tried
playing with the snd-hda-intel model option, but no model I've tried has
fixed the issue. Most models I've tried result in the exact same
behavior. However, setting snd-hda-intel model=auto results in different
behavior. With this set, the headphone output still works but the
internal speakers do not. Also, new controls appear in alsamixer:
"Headphone", "Speaker", and "Auto-Mute Mode". Pulseaudio also recognizes
this and allows me to select speakers or headphones for output. However,
nothing I do will make the internal speakers actually produce sound.
It's worth noting that on previous versions of Ubuntu, these separate
headphone and speaker controls were never available (speakers auto
muted, I actually thought it was a hardware disconnect), and if the
speakers actually worked this mode would be preferable.
