Public bug reported:

I am having this weird issue:

Recently I have installed ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 using a live flash drive.
Installation finished without any hiccup. But, when I reboot, it freezes before
reaching the login screen. All I see is only a purple screen, not even mouse
pointer. The login screen appears only when I disable KMS by appending
"nomodeset". Disabling KMS lets me login and use ubuntu, but resolution is
low(800x600 while my monitor supports 1366x768) and no 2d/3d acceleration. It
looks ugly.
Interestingly, resolution, 2d/3d accleration works flawlessly when I boot from
a live flash drive. All the problems start after installation.

System configuration:

CPU - amd athlon2 x4 640
Chipset - 880GM
Memory - 4G
Graphics card - AMD HD6670( I am using VGA, as my monitor doesn't have hdmi/dvi)

In short, the problem is: ubuntu works flawlessly from a live media but
freezes before reaching login screen when installed and run from system
hard disk. Only disabling KMS lets me login and continue, but with ugly
graphics.

I encountered the same problem when I tried Fedora-17 and submitted bug report
to fedora's bug tracking system. Please see it here:
