Hi Thomas! It took some time for me to grasp what this was all about, I never got any response on this issue.
I never got the U220 to work in a good way in Ubuntu but then Android phones came along with their WLAN tethering ability and I have not used the U220 dongle since then. It is a much faster solution which needs no special drivers or anything. Anyway thanks for the tip. If I ever need to use the modem again I will have a look at it.
