OK, after startup today, all's well. The launcher has returned to the settings I have with no problems at all. The dash is also fine. The HPLIP indicator is still failing to hide in the upper panel, but that's minor, and, as I stated before, I'm not certain if it's even related to this.
Thank you all for your help. It's amazing how fast and well problems in Ubuntu are fixed, even the minor ones. Had this been Windows, I would have to live with it forever.
