Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Since it is a release goal for gutsy to have composite by default, we really
need to work on the polish to get out the rough edges. Right now, if you
enable desktop effects, when you go to play a video it does not generally
display properly because the incorrect output for video is selected in
gstreamer-properties, you have to select the 'no xv' option, which then takes a
ton of cpu because I guess it needs an intermediate buffer.
With compiz 0.5.0 David Reveman created a plugin for compiz and patches to
mplayer and X to solve this

I would imagine most of the hard work is done already (the code already
exists). Would it be possible to work with upstream to get this working for
gutsy? It's always the little details like this that end up making a world of
difference to the end user (eg, why is this so slow, why is this using so much
battery?... etc). Worst comes to worst, gutsy+1?

** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
