Public bug reported: Unusual problem that has been on computer since an attempt at upgrading several packages through Ubuntu tweak on Unity desktop. Have since been trying to remove programs through apt-get remove to eliminate the programs that won't autoremove and won't upgrade through apt-get or apt- fast.
