I cannot reproduce the bug. In /etc/default/grub I tried replacing GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x600 with GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 (followed by an update-grub) then with the line commented (#) (followed by an update-grub)
But no difference : the system starts OK. I am very sorry ! Or has an update coincidentally solved the problem ?
