Attached is the result of running the suggested commands: I seem to have sufficient space in persistence, approximately 1.7G , of a 4G usb flash drive.
I tried an experiment to install a couple of packages from the Ubuntu Software Center: Gwenview and Alarm Clock, both packages seemed to fail near the end of their full installation and appeared to be automatically removed however, both packages were indeed installed and are functional. Curious? This particular O.S. seems to be running fine in all other regards.
