etoys is a squeak VM, http://www.squeakland.org/
So, if I open squeak I have a menu with all my VM, etoys included. And etoys runs much faster (at acceptable speed) when is launched from squeak. Perhaps the problem is the same as described at: http://tracker.squeakland.org/browse/SQ-400 I have a desktop 64 bit machine with 12.04 too and it not happens.
