One further observation isn't particularly surprising: I finally managed to navigate some 5 directories deep to copy some photos from the camera. Just a copy-paste from the camera to a local directory. The action took some minutes to begin (just like opening directories), but the files transferred in seconds. Again, the problem does not lie in data transfer rates.
