Can you check with a dpkg -l your asterisk version ? It should be
1.2.7.1.dfsg-2ubuntu3.1 now.

I can not reproduce your bug, and I have experienced none of the problem
you listed here with my Ubuntu Asterisk box.

Did you change the location of the pidfile ? Your fix concerns a PIDFILE
that seems to be outside the /var/run directory.
