Many thanks I believe that your suspicion is correct - I am trying to remove a swap error on sources.list having mishandled the vim editor. I have a feeling I shall have to re-install ubuntu which I am running with windows on a separate hd - that is unless I can get rid of ftp://ftp.debian .org_dists_sarge_main_binary-i386_Packages which must be quite large as a file. memory available, sorry cannot say !
