I think I found out how to reproduce this bug. It happens when the ui preference "image-gallery-resizable" is set to "true":
myself@machine:~$ eog & myself@machine:~$ gsettings set org.gnome.eog.ui "image-gallery-resizable" true and eog segfaults. This particular dconf key cannot be set via the preferences gui in eog (at least not in the current version, and perhaps not ever -- see quote below). In my case, this setting was inherited via an upgrade from lucid (10.04), which in turn had been upgraded from older versions all the way back to 4.10. >From release notes of eog 2.19.1: * Support for setting image collection position (left, right, top, bottom) and wether it's resizable or not.
