Public bug reported:

deja-dup (or underlying duplicity) cannot backup/restore from a remote
share (smb://, ssh://) if the package gvfs-backends is note installed -
the error message is rather cryptic - "Address is not connectable". It's
really unclear which package should be installed for the network backup
to work - I had to find it by trial and error.

"gvfs-backends" should be at least listed as optional or suggested
package for deja-dup or duplicity.
