FYI: This problem appears to be directly related to my attempts to install a driver from http://www.canon.com.au/products/all_in_one_printers/all_in_one_printers/mp600_support.aspx. I had no problems with my HP for two weeks until yesterday when I tried again to install this canon driver. The driver does not work for me, it failed the cupstest and caused my HP to revert from local to network. In addition, attempts to uninstall and reinstall were unsuccessful because cups could no longer detect the HP. Deleting the canon driver from the aussie website, uninstalling the Canon and this particular driver, then uninstalling the HP, and then unplugging and reinstalling the HP fixed the problem for me. See also https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cupsys/+bug/114708. Hope this helps someone.
