Additional tests: we have tried the fglrx-updates drivers for the ATI card but the cpu usage stayed the same at 60%. The only thing that partially solves is uninstall of fglrx, using radeon xorg driver. Now the cpu usage drops to 7% but is still larger than 3% on a nvidia card...
