The internal microphone is missing from my Acer Aspire 1810TZ and the workaround of comment #32 restores it in the sound settings dialog. However, to make the microphone effectively work, I have to unlock the input channels with pavucontrol and set them to different levels, as described here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/449855/comments/41 (not only for skype, but for other applications also).
