This machine did not run Ubuntu before.  It ran Debian Lenny (5.0) with
kernel 2.6.26 and did not have this problem.

I have just tried booting it with linux-image-3.4.0-999-generic-
pae_3.4.0-999.201205160409_i386.deb and I am no longer seeing the
warning messages output by the kernel.
