As Eric Stewart (kmgc) I have successfully installed the upstream
synergy-1.3.8 as shown below and it provides a workaround for the
synergyc crash issues:

wget http://synergy.googlecode.com/files/synergy-1.3.8-Linux-i686.deb
sudo dpkg --install synergy-1.3.8-Linux-i686.deb 
sudo apt-mark hold synergy
