I can confirm this effects me as well. I am running a nvidia card with the version current accelerated driver. It may be worth booting into 2d unity for a while and seeing if this effects the bug.
My two cents for finding the bug is that it invariably blacks out after I press the enter key. The bug doesn't seem to be a problem with a certain application, as it has happened with most (just crashed IDLE). That some report it happens with chrome I think is just a symptom of that being the most frequently used application. This is by far the largest problem with 12.04 right now for me.
