When the desktop-base package is installed, you will *always* get a
background image for GRUB, and you will lose the pretty aubergine hue
during boot. This cannot be changed without editing
/etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme.

The GNOME desktop depends on desktop-base, so installing GNOME will
cause this issue.
